Tripura to operationalize six new EMRS Campuses by November, expanding residential education for tribal students

tripura to operationalize six new emrs campuses by november expanding residential education for tribal students

Tripura is set to significantly expand its residential education network for tribal communities, with six new Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) expected to become operational by November.

The addition will raise the number of functional EMRSs in the state from 12 to 18, marking a major step in strengthening access to quality education for students from remote tribal areas.

Director of Tribal Welfare Subhasish Das confirmed that construction of the six campuses has been completed, with only minor finishing works pending. He said the schools will begin functioning once staffing arrangements are finalised.

To bridge the immediate requirement, the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) under the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs has approved the temporary deployment of teaching and non‑teaching staff from existing EMRSs. Fresh recruitment will follow to meet full staffing needs.

Das also noted that the entrance test for admissions to the new schools has already been conducted, ensuring that students can be enrolled as soon as the campuses open.

In a related development, the state government has secured approval to engage construction agencies beyond the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for future EMRS projects. This move is expected to provide greater flexibility and efficiency in implementation.

Das pointed out that CPWD’s estimated cost for building an EMRS campus exceeds Rs 70 crore, while NESTS has capped the approved budget at Rs 50 crore per school. The Tripura Housing and Construction Board (THCB) has meanwhile projected that comparable campuses can be built for around Rs 54 crore, offering a more cost‑effective alternative.

NESTS has already sanctioned Rs 100 crore for two upcoming EMRS campuses—one at Mungiakami in Khowai district and another at Dasda in North Tripura district—with each school allocated Rs 50 crore. Should construction costs exceed the sanctioned amount, the Tripura government will bear the additional expenditure.

Officials emphasized that the expansion of EMRSs is expected to strengthen residential education opportunities for tribal students, particularly those living in remote and underserved regions.

By providing structured learning environments, modern facilities, and residential support, the schools aim to bridge educational gaps and empower tribal youth with access to higher opportunities.
