Tripura has placed itself firmly on India’s tourism map with close to four lakh visitors recorded in just the first half of 2026.Â
Â
Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a statement to the Lok Sabha on Monday, confirmed that the state welcomed 3,93,877 tourists between January and June — 3,84,453 from within India and 9,424 from abroad.
Â
Officials say the figures reflect a steady rise in Tripura’s appeal as a destination, with Agartala serving as the main gateway for travellers heading to sites such as Udaipur’s temples, the water palace of Neermahal, Sepahijala’s wildlife sanctuary, the rock carvings of Unakoti and the scenic banks of Chabimura.
Â
The Centre has underlined its continued push to promote tourism in the North-East through exhibitions, fairs, festivals, digital campaigns and social media outreach. Since 2013, the International Tourism Mart has been held annually to showcase the region’s potential. The most recent edition in Gangtok in November 2025 brought together stakeholders from across the eight North-Eastern states, including entrepreneurs, buyers, sellers and government agencies.
Â
Tripura has also received direct financial support to strengthen its cultural calendar. During 2025-26, Rs 80 lakh was released to the state for tourism-linked festivals — Rs 30 lakh each for the Neermahal and Diwali festivals, and Rs 20 lakh each for Chabimura and Tirthamukh. These events have become major draws for visitors, blending heritage with local traditions.
Â
Digital promotion has been boosted through the revamped Incredible India platform, launched in September 2024, which now features multilingual content highlighting North-Eastern destinations. Infrastructure development is being supported under schemes such as Swadesh Darshan 2.0, PRASHAD, SASCI and Challenge Based Destination Development, with an emphasis on sustainability and responsible tourism.
Â
Connectivity has improved under the RCS-UDAN scheme, with routes like Agartala–Aizawl enhancing regional travel and making it easier for tourists to explore multiple destinations. Cleanliness and sustainability have also been prioritized through initiatives such as the Swachhata Action Plan, Swachhata Pakhwada and Swachhata Hi Seva.
Â
With nearly four lakh visitors in just six months, Tripura’s tourism sector is expected to remain a key focus area. Agartala’s role as the state’s tourism and connectivity hub is set to strengthen further, positioning Tripura as one of the most promising destinations in the North-East.
