In a moving ceremony that celebrated courage and compassion, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Wednesday honoured citizens who played a vital role in saving lives by rushing accident victims to hospitals.
The event, held at Conference Hall No. 1 of the State Secretariat, recognised the awardees under the ‘Rahveer’ or Good Samaritan initiative, a programme designed to encourage timely assistance to road accident victims.
The minister presented each awardee with Rs 25,000 and a certificate of recognition, acknowledging their humanitarian service. Among those honoured were Kajal Debnath and Prasenjit Bhowmik (jointly), Ashesh Das, Khurshid Mia, and Ajit Das from Gomati district; Satyajit Kumar Shil and Satya Ranjan Debnath from Dhalai district; and Latika Sinha from Unakoti district. Each of them had stepped forward in moments of crisis, ensuring that injured individuals received immediate medical care.
Chowdhury emphasised that the essence of the Rahveer initiative is simple yet profound: “After an accident, do not hesitate—help the injured, take them to the hospital, and assist in saving a precious life.” He praised the awardees for overcoming fear and hesitation, describing their actions as examples of humanitarian courage and social responsibility.
The minister further noted that such acts of bravery inspire society at large, reinforcing the message that road safety is not only about enforcement but also about collective responsibility. He urged citizens to embrace the spirit of Rahveer, saying, “Let us not say ‘no’ in times of crisis—extend the hand of humanity and stand beside those in need.”
Officials highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader effort by the Transport Department to strengthen road safety measures, encourage community participation in accident response, and reduce fatalities through timely medical intervention.
The ceremony underscored the growing importance of Good Samaritan protections, which assure citizens that they can assist accident victims without fear of legal complications.
