In recognition of the successful implementation of the Chief Minister's Rubber Mission Project, the Tripura government’s Tribal Welfare Department has been conferred the prestigious SKOCH Silver Award.
Launched on 14 August, 2021, the primary objective of the Chief Minister's Rubber Mission is to create long-term livelihood and income opportunities, particularly for tribal and marginalised communities, through rubber cultivation. Under the project, along with the expansion of rubber cultivation, emphasis has been placed on farmer training, capacity building, processing and value addition.
Although the initial target was to bring 30,000 hectares of land under rubber cultivation, due to the project's overwhelming response, the target was increased to 69,000 hectares. Currently, 69,944.45 hectares of land have been brought under rubber cultivation, benefiting 89,895 beneficiaries, according to a press release.
With the aim of improving the quality of rubber sheets and boosting market value, initiatives have been taken to set up 46 large smoke houses and 25 integrated rubber processing centres. This will further enhance opportunities for rubber processing and value addition.
Various agencies, including the Tribal Welfare Department, NABARD, the Rubber Board, ATMA, MGNREGA, TFDPC Limited, TRPC Limited, TRP&PTG, and TTAADC, are working in a coordinated manner to implement the Chief Minister's Rubber Mission.
The SKOCH Silver Award is a significant recognition of the initiatives undertaken to promote long-term livelihoods, financial self-reliance, and rubber-based economic activities among Tripura's tribal and marginalised communities.
