Tripura University ends leadership vacuum with Dr Debabrata Das as new Vice Chancellor

Tripura University has ended months of administrative uncertainty with the appointment of Professor Dr Debabrata Das as its new full‑time Vice Chancellor. He formally assumed office on Wednesday at a ceremony on the university campus, restoring regular leadership at the central institution.

The installation event was attended by faculty members, staff, senior officials, and outgoing in‑charge Vice Chancellor Professor Shyamal Das, who handed over responsibilities. The post had remained vacant since the departure of Professor Ganga Prasad Prasain, a gap that had slowed several academic and administrative processes.

A distinguished academic with more than three decades of experience, Professor Das has served at Rajiv Gandhi University, Gauhati University, and Tezpur University. He has led major research projects under the UGC Special Assistance Programme and worked with funding from the ICSSR, Union ministries, IGNOU, and the Ford Foundation. His international credentials include post‑doctoral research in France under the Indo‑French Cultural Exchange Programme.

Professor Das has published more than 65 research papers, authored two books, and edited several academic volumes. He has also served on the Arunachal Pradesh Private Educational Institution Regulatory Commission and completed the Senior Academic Leadership Programme at Oxford’s Saïd Business School under the LEAP initiative.

Members of the university community expressed optimism that his appointment will accelerate academic growth, strengthen research initiatives, and improve overall governance at Tripura University.
