Agartala, Apr 25: Tripura’s first Padma Shri awardee Himangshu Mohan Chowdhury, a retired Civil Service officer, passed away at 84 on Tuesday.

When he was posted as SDO Sonamura during the 1971 War, he had extended helping hands to over 2.5 lakh Bangladeshis, who came to Tripura to escape the war. He had set up tents and temporary kitchens for providing shelter and food to them.

Along with Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards in India, the then Bangladesh government had also honoured him as “outstanding friend of Bangladesh”.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and many others mourned the demise of Chowdhury and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.
