Unaccounted cash worth Rs 10 lakh seized

In a joint operation, Tripura Police and Border Security Force personnel seized a large amount of unaccounted cash in a border village under the jurisdiction of Sonamura police station, officials said on Friday.

The recovery was made from the residence of one Mofiz Miah at Anandnagar village, a border-adjacent area that has long been identified by law enforcement agencies as vulnerable to ganja smuggling activities.

Acting on specific inputs, a joint team of Sonamura police and personnel of the 81st Battalion of the BSF conducted a search operation at the house, during which cash amounting to Rs 9,83,800 was seized.

According to the police, neither Mofiz Miah nor his family members were able to provide any satisfactory explanation regarding the source or purpose of keeping such a large sum of money at home.

In view of the absence of valid documentation or justification, the cash was seized and brought to the police station in accordance with legal procedures.

Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura police station, Tapas Das, said that further action would be taken strictly as per government norms. He also informed the media persons that a special investigation team has been constituted to probe the matter in detail.

“The investigation team will examine the source of the seized money and submit its findings, on the basis of which necessary legal steps will be taken,” Das said.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
