Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha described Vande Mataram as a “sacred mantra of nation-building” during the state-level inauguration of its 150th anniversary celebrations held at the Secretariat on Friday.
Â
The event marked the beginning of a year-long nationwide observance initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour the legacy of the iconic national song.
Â
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Saha said he felt “immense emotion and pride” while listening to the collective rendition of Vande Mataram. He also joined the virtual broadcast of Prime Minister Modi’s inspirational message, which he believes will ignite patriotism and the spirit of sacrifice among the younger generation.
Â
The Chief Minister traced the historical journey of Vande Mataram, composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in the 1870s and first published in the novel Anandamath in 1882. He highlighted its role in the Swadeshi and anti-partition movements, its ban under British rule, and its eventual adoption as India’s National Song in 1950.
Â
“The song personifies the motherland as a goddess, creating a deep emotional and spiritual bond among people across regions and religions,” he said.
Â
Dr. Saha emphasized that Vande Mataram remains a powerful symbol of national pride and freedom. He announced that Tripura will observe the anniversary through year-long programs across districts, subdivisions, blocks, government and private institutions, schools, and colleges. The aim, he said, is to educate citizens—especially school children—about the song’s history and significance.
Â
He encouraged all participants to upload photos and videos of their involvement to official platforms, fostering a shared spirit of patriotism. Concluding his remarks, the Chief Minister expressed hope that this historic initiative will inspire citizens to contribute to the vision of a “Viksit Bharat,” echoing the Prime Minister’s call for a developed and united India.
