Woman held with endangered wildlife species in North Tripura

Dharmanagar, Aug 13: Police in North Tripura District on Friday night seized a huge number of endangered wildlife species of caged birds, animals and lizards from the possession of 45-year-old Debi Chandra at Batrashi area under Dharmanagar sub-division.
The animals were in transit and supposed to reach Agartala. A specific case has been registered in this regard to trace the mastermind behind the smuggling nexus.
The seized endangered species were identified as hornbills of African origin, one black cockatoo, 6 meerkat birds and 307 Iguana lizards.
Superintendent of Police North Tripura District Dr. Kiran Kumar said that acting on a specific information, police on Friday night rushed to the area and held the woman. Hailing from Rajasthan and now settled in Pune, the woman is a casual Safai worker in the railway department. Police seized the endangered species which have a market value of around Rs. 1 crore, he said.
Case was registered with the Dharmanagar police station on Friday. Reportedly, the wild life will also register a case against the woman.
