Women block road in South Tripura over water crisis

Residents of East Kolabaria in Belonia staged a road blockade led by local women on Wednesday afternoon, demanding a permanent solution to the drinking water shortage in their area.

For the past month, villagers have been facing severe difficulties due to lack of regular water supply. They said water tankers sent by the department are irregular and insufficient, forcing them to walk long distances to collect water. Despite repeated complaints to Panchayat and block officials, the problem remained unresolved.

Traffic was halted for some time on the Belonia–Santirbazar road. The South District Magistrate’s vehicle was caught in the blockade, and he spoke directly with the women to hear their grievances. Soon after, officials from the Water Resources Department, the Block Development Office, police, and TSR forces reached the spot.

Villagers criticized the Panchayat Pradhan for not addressing their concerns despite repeated appeals.

In the presence of the District Magistrate, water department officials assured that a permanent solution would be implemented by April. Until then, daily water supply through tankers would be arranged. Following this assurance, the women lifted the blockade.
