A 24-year-old youth, critically injured in a road accident, was saved following an emergency surgical intervention at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital.
The emergency surgery was made possible due to the recent addition of the 'emergency life saving surgery' facility in the hospital which was an ambitious step of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha who also holds the health portfolio.
The youth, identified as Pradip Debbarma, a resident of Debipur in Mohanpur, suffered severe injuries in an accident on April 11 morning. He was first taken to Hezamara Primary Health Centre and later referred to the medical college hospital in a critical state.
Doctors at the Emergency Medicine Department immediately initiated treatment upon his arrival. Considering the seriousness of his condition, an emergency life-saving surgical procedure was performed by a team of specialists, marking one of the first such interventions at the facility, officials said.
The surgery was carried out under the supervision of the General Surgery Department led by Professor and Unit Head Dr Nilotpala Chakma. The team included Dr Pritam Das, Dr Sourav Das, Dr Abirami P P and Dr Bhupendra Kumar, while anaesthesia was administered by Dr Anindita Debnath and Dr Jiniya Debnath, supported by OT staff.
Officials said the introduction of advanced trauma care and emergency surgical capabilities at the hospital was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the state.
The patient is currently stable and recovering under medical supervision. Family members expressed gratitude to the attending doctors and healthcare staff for the timely intervention.
