Agartala, June 30: In the run up to the crucial 2023 general assembly elections, the leader of opposition Manik Sarkar on Thursday said that he has ‘no objection’ to a united opposition front against BJP.
Manik Sarkar was replying to the query over the Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman’s call for a united opposition front against the BJP party. “If he wants to take the initiative and accomplish his call, then we have no objection with it,” Sarkar told reporters.
He said, “We already called to strengthen the united movement against the BJP party. We need to keep putting pressure on the government.”
Addressing a press conference on Thursday here at the party headquarter, Manik Sarkar said that a five-member delegation of the CPI-M MLAs on Thursday met the Governor Satyadeo Narayan Arya and Director General of Police (DGP), VS Yadav over poll violence in Tripura.
“We apprised them of the situation prevailing in the state of Tripura and highlighted the post and pre-poll violence which took place across the state since announcement of the by-poll date,” Sarkar said.
The five-member delegation comprised of Manik Sarkar, former minister and MLA Bhanulal Saha, MLA Ratan Bhowmik, MLA Shahid Chowdhury, and Prabhat Chowdhury.
Manik Sarkar, who led the delegation to the Governor said, “After hearing all our grievances, the Governor, through his secretary, assured us that he would certainly forward the memorandum copies to the state government with necessary directions.”
Sarkar questioned the role of police in containing the election-triggered violence that has spread across the state and termed the attitude of DGP as highly “objectionable”. He alleged that there is no rule of law as ‘Jungle Raj’ is prevailing in the state of Tripura under the rule of the BJP government.
The leader of opposition Manik Sarkar on Thursday appealed to the people to become vocal and come out on the streets. “Put pressure on the government collectively to restore democracy, save the Constitution and rule of law along with fighting for work and food,” he said.
On the other hand, the delegation led by MLA Bhanu Lal Saha met DGP Tripura Police seeking his intervention to stop the brutal attacks on opposition party workers taking place across the state.
“The DGP initially tried to evade responsibility but later promised to investigate all incidents of violence,” Saha said, adding that the delegation informed the DGP of how the intensity of the violence only enhances if the victims try to take help from the police.
