Agartala, Apr 23: Tripura on Friday joined the nation in observing the jayanti of principal architect of the Indian Constitution Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
The state-level programme was held at Ujjayanta Palace premises where Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, SC Welfare minister Sudhangshu Das, Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumder and Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta among others paid tributes to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar dedicated his whole life to ensuring the rights of the backward class.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a government holiday on the birthday of Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as a mark of respect, Dr. Saha told reporters.
In another programme, the foundation stone of statue of the great social reformer was laid at Tripura Legislative Assembly premises.
The Chief Minister along with the SC Welfare minister, Deputy Speaker of Assembly Ram Prasad Paul, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy and others were present.
Dr. Saha said, an amount of Rs. 50 lakh would be required to install the 18-feet tall statue.
The Chief Minister also extended his greetings to the people of Tripura on the occasion of Bengali New year.
Meanwhile, the SC Welfare department organized a colourful rally with the participation of students from various schools to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The rally started from Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan and ended at Ujjayanta Palace.
Besides, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution was also remembered at Bharatiya Janata Party's state office where the Chief Minister along with BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee and others paid tributes.
