Agartala, June 20: Tripura Pradesh Congress came down heavily on the ruling BJP for the alleged attack on Sudip Roy Barman. Later, the Pradesh leadership accompanied by the Central leaders went to the East Police station on Monday demanding the arrest of the attackers. Also, a delegation of the party met the CEO KiranGitte today demanding free and fair by-polls.
“The attack on Sudip Roy Barman is the result of fear of the BJP anticipating a major defeat in the by-polls”, said AICC Tripura In-charge Dr. Ajoy Kumar while addressing a press meet in Agartala on Monday.
Sudip Roy Barman, the Congress candidate for the Tripura by-elections to be held on June 23, was injured after a group of goons allegedly attacked him last Sunday night in UjanAbhoynagar area in the capital city. Later Sudip was admitted to a private hospital in Agartala and is undergoing treatment there.
Addressing the media, Dr. Ajoy Kumar condemned the attack on Roy Barman, alleging that the situation turned worse after Assam Chief Minister HimantaBiswaSarma's visit to the state on Sunday for the by-election campaign.
“I appeal to voters to give a befitting reply to the BJP-sponsored Gunda raj through ballots in the June 23 by-polls”, he said. Dr. Kumar added, BJP is “a party of goons” and the attack is a result of fearing an imminent defeat as Sudip and Asish are set to win the By-election in both Agartala Assembly Constituency seats by huge margins.
Slamming BJP Minister Sushanta Choudhury over his press statement on the attack on Sudip, Dr. Ajoy Kumar said, “Sushanta Choudhury is a liar and a fraud. The video footages reveal he was leading the hooligans. Also, the attack took place in front of Sushanta Choudhury, BJP Candidate for 6-Agartala, Dr. Ashok Sinha and other Yuva Morcha activists.”
Condemning the violence and attack, Congress activists led by Dr Kumar, Birajit Sinha and other senior leaders marched to the East Agartala police station and lodged an FIR with the demand to immediately arrest the culprits involved in the attack.
The Congress also met the Chief Electoral Officer today evening. The Congress leaders demanded enforcement of Central Forces, free and fair polls, driving out the outsiders staying in hotels and bungalows in 6-Agartala and 8-Bordowali Assembly constituency areas.
