Agartala May 22: Raising several demands, students of Bir Bikram Memorial College (BBMC), Agartala staged a protest by locking the principal under the banner of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) here on Monday.
The agitating students alleged severe water crisis for past four years, unavailability of student Id Cards, lack of cleanliness staff in the college as the major issues.
Speaking to the reporters, one of the students said, “For at least four years there has been an extreme water shortage in the college. Toilets are in pathetic condition as there is no cleanliness staff”.
“Besides, no identity cards have been provided to the students for long years by the college authorities”, he alleged.
On being asked about the protest, Dr Ratan Das, principal BBM College admitted that the demands raised by the students are valid.
He said, “Because of the theft of pipes the college is facing a water crisis. But a tender has already been called for the work and the problem will be resolved at the earliest”.
Talking about the issue of cleanliness staff, the principal said, “There are no cleanliness staff but we make sure that toilets are cleaned on a regular basis and for that workers are hired by the college”.
Dr Das further said that after 2018, no government college, to his knowledge, issued identity cards.
“Because of the Covid led pandemic no identity cards were issued to the students in previous years after 2018”, he said.
The principal however assured that he will talk about the issue of Id cards with other college authorities as well and see that the students can be provided the same.
Apart from that, principal Dr Ratan Das also informed about calling a meeting of the College development committee and see that the demands are fulfilled at the earliest.
