BJP holds massive protest demanding Sahajahan's arrest
Hundreds of BJP activists on Monday held a protest march in Agartala city demanding immediate arrest of Congress leader Sahajahan Islam. Amid tight security the party rally traversed through different roads of the city including the Post Office Chowmuhani where the Congress headquarters is located. The BJP leaders condemned the “tone and tenor” in which the Congress activist expressed his views on the recent tense situations that emerged over open cow slaughter in different parts of the city on the day of Bakra Eid.
Later, a delegation of the BJP led by Sadar District President Ashim Bhattacharjee met Superintendent of Police West Tripura Kiran Kumar K at police headquarters and urged him to arrest Islam.
“We strongly condemn the derogatory and communally charged remarks made by Sahajahan Miah (Islam) on social media against the Chief Minister of the state, Professor Dr. Manik Saha, members of our Home Department, the President of our Minority Morcha, and the Chairman of our Minority Board. Our esteemed Chief Minister, Professor Dr. Manik Saha, is a gentleman and a renowned doctor. The way Sahajahan has spoken about him is utterly disrespectful. He is devoted to the overall development of the state. For the past seven years, the BJP government in our state has been striving to ensure that people from all communities benefit from the fruits of development,” Bhattacharjee told the media..
According to Bhattacharjee, the kind of language Shahjahan used against our Chief Minister, and the continued support he is receiving from two so-called Congress leaders, is highly objectionable. “That is why we have come to meet the Superintendent of Police today. We were at the East Police Station till late last night. There was a lot of anger among our young workers, but we acted immediately to control the situation so that no untoward incident could take place. However, from their homes, bricks were thrown at our BJP karyakartas. Despite this, our workers remained restrained. Around 3 a.m. last night, we filed an FIR demanding exemplary punishment for Sahajahan, so that no one can instigate communal violence again,” said Bhattacharjee.
Meanwhile, police had already arrested the father and brother of Sahajahan Islam identified as Najrul Islam and Khairul Islam respectively. On the other hand, search operations are underway to arrest the Sahajahan as soon as possible, sources in the police department said.
