Boxanagar Jun 17: Boxanagar Excavation Site that showcases the remains of a 9th-century civilization including ruins of a Buddhist Vihara and stone sculptures is witnessing a surge in tourist interest in recent days following significant investments from both central and state governments.
The site’s development has been bolstered by a generous Rs 150 crore grant from the Government of Myanmar and an additional Rs 250 crore allocation from the Government of India.
Representatives of archaeological department and officials of Tripura government have made multiple visits to Boxanagar, engaging with the local villagers and overseeing the initiation of a Rs 5 crore project that includes construction of a parking zone and a luxury bungalow, with the latter nearing completion.
Meanwhile, in an effort to preserve the integrity of the site plans are underway to re-route the Boxanagar – Rahimpur road. While the road metalling work is pending, the drainage work is nearabout complete.
Apart from that, to enhance the site’s aesthetic appeal, negotiations are ongoing to acquire surrounding land for further development. Among others, proposals also include creating water bodies around the Buddha Stupa to augment its beauty.
The completion of a bungalow, parking zone and modern restaurant is imminent, providing employment for 10 workers, with more job opportunities expected as the site grows.
The future of Boxanagar’s archaeological heritage hangs in balance as initiatives unfold, promising economic self-reliance through tourism for its residents.
