Gandachhera, May 2: In yet another instance of the government's apathy towards the welfare of the poor, the school education of a newspaper hawker's son and daughter is about to come to a grinding halt due to financial constraints. The incident has come to light from the Gandachhara Haripur 12 card area, where Tapan Mallick, a resident of the area and a newspaper hawker, is struggling to make ends meet for his family of four.
Despite living below the poverty line, the family is reportedly deprived of the benefits of the Below Poverty Line (BPL) or Antodaya ration cards. Amita Das Mallick, the wife of Tapan Mallick, revealed that her husband earns a meagre Rs. 3,000 per month by distributing newspapers, making it incredibly difficult for the family to survive on this amount.
The expenses of their children's education fall solely on Tapan, who has been unable to provide them with basic necessities such as books, notebooks, pens, school bags, shoes, socks, clothes, and pants.
Amita also disclosed that despite submitting the necessary documents to the Child Development Project Officer's (CDPO) office requesting an allowance for their female child, they have not received any such allowance yet.
Moreover, Tapan Mallick remains physically unfit throughout the year and is unable to do any heavy work. In this situation, Amita Das Mallick demanded employment from the government to improve their condition.
Local people said, if the administration ponders over the welfare schemes and finds out suitable schemes for the family, the education of the innocent children would be hampered.
