Agartala Feb 21: On the occasion of International Mother Language Day and the Great Martyr's Day of Bangladesh, the national flag of Bangladesh was flown at half-mast, and wreaths were laid at the Shaheed Bedi at the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala on Friday. The event was attended by Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner Arif Mohammad and other dignitaries.
Assistant High Commissioner Arif Mohammad addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of the day.
He remarked, "Today is the Great Martyr's Day and International Mother Language Day. In 1952, the people of Bangladesh defended the dignity of the Bengali language with their fresh blood to protect the right to their mother language. Since then, the whole of Bangladesh has celebrated February 21 as Mother Language Day."
Highlighting the global recognition of the day, he added, "The biggest milestone is that in 1999, UNESCO recognized February 21 as International Mother Language Day. This recognition has allowed the entire Bengali nation to celebrate Mother Language Day alongside the global community."
The Assistant High Commissioner underscored the importance of preserving mother languages worldwide. He stated, "Therefore, on this day, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission is paying respect to all the mother languages of the world. It is essential to ensure that no mother language is lost from the heart of the world."
He also urged everyone to respect and not look down on the mother languages of others.
