Boxanagar Nov 30: Police destroyed huge number of cannabis plants sprouted across in the deep forest of Veluarchar area on Wednesday. The market value of the contraband was expected to be around Rs 30 lakh.
Ganja cultivation is increasing rapidly while using the government forest lands in various nooks and corners of the state.
Sonamura sub-division has turned to be the hot-bed of cannabis cultivation.
Although there was a short decline in the trade soon after the change in government in the year 2028 but later it increased manifold.
Areas like Kamalnagar, Ghatighar, Lacharbari, Anandnagar, Matinagar, Batadola in Sonamura sub-division, rampant cannabis cultivation is going on.
This year, cannabis growers in various areas of Sonamura police station have planted a large number of cannabis plants in the government forest land and private places.
On the basis of such information, on Wednesday from 9 am to 1 pm, a continuous operation was conducted for several hours in Veluarchar area of Kalamchoura Police station in about 5 hectares of land.
At the same time, the six tong houses that the farmers used to take shelter to guard the ganja garden were also burnt down.
The authorities of the administration said that the market value of these ganja plants will be around Rs 30 lakh.
OC Prashanta Kumar Dey and higher authorities of 150 Battalion BSF led the operation on Wednesday. Besides, Boxanagar forest department also took active part in the operation.
Also, SI Supritam Dey, 150th Battalion BSF Ashabari BOP Company Commander Akhilesh Yadav, Boxanagar Forest Department, Police, TSR Force personnel remained present to destroy the huge cannabis garden.
