Agartala, June 26: Tension ran high after a clash erupted between Congress and BJP supporters at Agartala's Post Office Chowmuhani soon after announcement of by-election results on Sunday.
Tripura pradesh Congress president Birajit Sinha was hospitalized after being injured in stone pelting during the clash.
A good number of motorcycles were vandalized near Congress Bhavan, Agartala during the incident. However, security personnel in adequate numbers were deployed and tear gas shells were fired to bring the situation under control.
Congress leaders- Sudip Roy Barman and Ashis Saha met the SP West in deputation at West Agartala police station soon after the clash.
Speaking to the media, Roy Barman said the brawl started after a Congress supporter of Agartala constituency was stabbed near IGM hospital.
A Congress worker alleged that he along with others was attacked at Rabindra Palli area (backside of IGM hospital) when they were returning home on motorcycles. The Congress worker said, the attackers used Trinamool Congress' flags but they were from BJP.
A group of BJP supporters came on bike and attacked Congress Bhavan leaving Birajit Sinha injured, a Congress leader alleged. According to the Congress leader, the entire incident took place in front of Police personnel.
On the other hand, a delegation of BJP also submitted deputation to police regarding the Post Office Chowmuhani incident.
Speaking to the media ICA Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said, house of a BJP corporator was attacked.
He said, the BJP delegation met SP West and held discussions so that the law and order doesn't deteriorate. He said, a demand was also placed before Police for arresting the culprits involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, according to reports coming in from khowai, the local Congress party office was set on fire. Besides, MLA Brishaketu Debbarma and MDC Bidyut Debbarma were attacked.
As per the by-election results on Sunday, BJP has won three out of four seats while Congress secured victory in 6-Agartala constituency.
