Cong-BJP face- off at Charilam, section 144 imposed

Charilam Aug 01: Tension prevailsĀ at Charilam surrounding reopening a Congress party office closed for long.
Senior Congress leaders led by TPCC President Birajit Sinha, MLA Sudip Roy Barman and former MLA Asish Saha reached Charilam to reopen the office as per their prescheduled event.
A small gathering of Congress workers also organized to mark the occasion but all of a sudden hundreds of BJP supporters holding saffron flags also gathered in a short distance from the event.
While the Congress workers were organizing a rally, the BJP supporters continued to raise slogans against the Congress party. The situation turned highly volatile after the BJP supporters came very close to the Congress office.
Sensing trouble the police deployment was tightened up with additional TSR troops. Local sources said, the police resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the crowds of both the parties.
Further details regarding the incident are awaited. However, to avert any untoward incident, the administration has promulgated section 144.
