Agartala/Kalyanpur Nov 19: Tripura Pradesh Congress on Sunday paid rich tributes to the former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 106th birth anniversary.
Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha, AICC secretary Szarita Laitphlang, Congress MLAs Sudip Roy Barman, Gopal Chandra Roy, leaders of all frontal organizations of the party were among those who offered floral tributes to the former prime minister’s portrait and also hoisted the party flag at Pradesh Congress headquarters in capital city, Agartala.
Apart from that, Tripura Pradesh Congress organized a massive tree plantation program across the entire state to mark the occasion.
Speaking to the reporters, TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha remembered the contribution of Indira Gandhi towards the nation and the party.
Quoting Indira Gandhi’s statement “Forgiveness is the virtue of the brave”. Asish Kumar Saha said, “Her contribution towards upholding the unity and integrity of the country is worth remembering. But instead of holding on to the core values of unity, the present BJP- led government is playing the dirty politics of divide and rule”.
“Our neighbouring state Manipur is burning only because of ethnic clashes, but the ruling party and the suited booted leaders are relaxing in their AC rooms”, he alleged.
Talking to the reporters, MLA Sudip Roy Barman said, “Indira Gandhi used to love nature. And therefore, under the instructions of AICC, Tripura Congress has also taken up massive tree plantation program across the state”.
“Congress leaders, workers and supporters have planted approximately 5,000 trees to mark the occasion which will help to restore the environment in the state”, he added.
Our Kalyanpur Correspondent adds: The 106th birth anniversary of late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was celebrated with due dignity at Kalyanpur Congress Bhavan.
Kalyanpur Block Congress president Sadhan Chandra Mallik, Block general secretary Sandip Chanda, former Khowai District Congress president Bikram Kishore Sinha, Youth Leaders Karthik Debnath, Tarani Debbarma, Prashanta Deb along with Block Youth Congress president Uddhav Biswas were present at the program.
Addressing the program the Congress leaders said, “Indira Gandhi showed the country a new direction. She raised the slogan of basic amenities ‘Roti, Kapra aur Makan’ (Bread, Cloth and Shelter). Much of what is happening today are schemes and programs taken up during Indira Gandhi's tenure”.
Apart from the Congress Bhavan, trees were planted at Ramakrishna Ashram, Ramthakur Ashram, Anukal Chandra Ashram.
Also, fruit sweets were distributed to all the patients and health workers of Kalyanpur Hospital.
