Agartala Aug 23: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Wednesday paid rich tributes to the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi marking the ADC Manmani Sal here in Tripura.
TPCC President Ashish Kumar Saha accompanied by the party leadership including Tripura Pradesh Adivasi Congress president Shabd Kumar Jamatia hoisted the party flag in front of the Congress Bhawan, Agartala.
Addressing the reporters, TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha highlighted the significance of this day and also explained the contribution of the Congress party and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi towards the welfare of the indigenous people.
He said, “The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) was created under the sixth schedule of the Constitution when Indira Gandhi was the prime minister of the country.
“It was the former PM Indira Gandhi, who drafted the 125th amendment bill for the upliftment of the socio-economic and political status of the indigenous tribes in Tripura, but it is very unfortunate that the bill was not passed in the parliament”, he added.
Saha further said, “It was the UPA government which realized the importance of socio-economic and political development of the tribal society”.
Taking a dig at the present BJP-led government, the TPCC president said “The tribals in Tripura are being deprived at large under the rule of this BJP led coalition government, which snatched the democratic rights of people belonging to the indigenous community in ADC”.
In context of the ongoing flood crisis in Tripura, the State Congress president assured all necessary assistance for the victims who have taken refuge in various shelter camps and also expressed condolences towards the family members of the deceased’s persons.
