Kailashahar, Feb 19: A former Panchayat Pradhan of CPM was arrested by Tripura Police on Wednesday on the charge of misappropriation of government funds.

Irani police arrested Habib Uddin, former Pradhan of Srinathpur Gram Panchayat, based on a written complaint lodged by the then BDO of Gournagar block in October, 2022.

Speaking to the media, SDPO Kailashahar Jayanta Karmakar said, as per the complaint received from the BDO, the then panchayat secretary Yamir Ali was arrested by Irani police and Habib Uddin’s name was revealed during police interrogation.

But, he was absconding for a long time. Finally, based on secret information, police arrested the accused on Wednesday evening. He would be produced before the court on Thursday, the SDPO said.

The BDO’s complaint indicated misappropriation of over Rs. 36.85 lakh. It said, in the Financial Year 2016-17 and 2019-20, there were irregularities in the funds meant for 40 hand pumps and 13 bamboo palisades.
