Agartala, Feb 06: A joint delegation of the opposition CPM and the Congress party on Monday knocked the door of the office of the Chief Electoral Officer and met CEO Kiren Gitte to seek his intervention in ensuring free and fair polls on February 16 next.
The delegation comprised of CPM State secretary Jitendra Choudhury, Left Front convenor Narayan Kar, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, former MLA Ashish Saha and AICC secretary and party’s state in-charge Szarita Laitphlang.
“We met the CEO at his chamber and apprised him of several instances where the activists of the BJP party are violating the model code of conduct of the Election Commission of India and we said the CEO that in that way the BJP is challenging the ECI like what they did in the last five years,” said Jitendra Choudhury.
Sudip Roy Barman told the reporters the main purpose of the meeting was to bring the instances of violation of the model code of conduct, violence etc to the notice of the CEO.
He alleged, “Some officers including the civil and police are acting on behest of the ruling BJP party. We informed the CEO about many such instances, following which the CEO assured us of restricting such incidents to ensure free and fair elections.”
