Agartala, July 22: The opposition CPM delegation was on Monday stopped from visiting Gandatwisa (Gandacherra) in Dhalai district where violence between two communities claimed a life earlier this month. CPI(M) delegation was led by Leader of Opposition and MLA Jitendra Chaudhury.
The delegation was stopped near Amarpur in Gomati district on the ground that prohibitory orders were in place in Gandatwisa, said Jitendra Choudhury, adding that police had unlawfully stopped them entering Gandacherra.
Addressing a press conference here at the party headquarter on Monday evening, CPI(M) MLA Jitendra Choudhury said, “In prior permission of the DM Dhalai district, we were on our way to Gandatwisa to meet the people who are living in a temporary camp following the violence but the police stopped us.”
Choudhury, who was seen arguing with the police officers in Ambassa on Monday said, “Police stopped us on the ground of imposition of Section 163 of BNS Act. But can the police stop our way to Gandacherra under this section? We are highly disappointed by such an act of the police.”
“Under acute pressure, the helpless DM of Dhalai district later let the SP security to talk to me, where we were asked to leave the location. After several arguments with the police, we were bound to leave the location and come back to Agartala,” he told reporters.
He slammed the state police administration and said that the Dr Manik Saha led government is suing the police and its DGP to throttle the voice of democracy and snatch the citizen rights.
