Agartala Dec 03: Reflecting a profound shift in perspective by moving away from viewing disability as a limitation to acknowledging it as a ‘unique ability’, the term ‘disabled’ has been deleted forever. Instead, the term ‘Divyangjan’ meaning, “Person of Divine Abilities” has been introduced. This is a powerful action towards reshaping the societal attitudes towards the persons with disabilities, said Justice Arindam Lodh.
On Tuesday, the Justice, Tripura High Court, Arindam Lodh made the statement as he addressed a program organized to commemorate ‘International Day for Persons with Disabilities’ at New Hope, a pre-primary school located at Agartala’s Post Office Chowmani area.
Speaking at the program, Justice Arindam Lodh emphasized the inherent capabilities of every individual, stating, "Every person is capable in his own way. No one is disabled. Therefore, this word disabled should be deleted forever."
He highlighted the unique talents of differently abled persons and urged parents not to be disheartened. Instead, he encouraged them to ensure their children participate equally in all sectors and be recognized as equal partners in society.
Justice Lodh commended the founders of New Hope, Sukanta Nath Bhowmik and Manisha Das for their commendable work in the development of autistic children.
He addressed the founders, suggesting that they must initiate talks with the government to establish a school and housing complex in the state for these Divyang children.
“A school dedicated entirely to the differently abled children and a shelter home with all necessary facilities is needed in the state. No parent will live forever, a housing complex meant for them would ensure that they are well-supported even in the absence of their parents or guardians”, he said.
Justice Lodh also ensured all necessary help in this context.
He further discussed the Persons with Disability Act and support of the apex Court of India for the Divyangjans.
“In addressing disability rights, the country has made significant strides in recent years. Many campaigns, schemes etc. are in force to ensure overall development of the PwDs. Besides, the government’s, both at Centre and the State have rolled out a series of initiatives aimed at empowering the Divyangjans and ensuring their integration into every aspect of society”, he said.
He also highlighted 4 percent seat reservation for differently abled persons, emphasizing the importance of these measures in promoting inclusivity and equality.
The program at New Hope held under the theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”, not only celebrated the International Day of the Disabled but also reinforced the message of capability and inclusivity.
