Agartala, Dec 02: At least twelve houses suffered damage after an earthquake, measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale, hit Tripura on Saturday.
According to an official report, total 12 houses have been damaged due to the earthquake that occurred at 09:05 am in the morning. The number of houses figure included 10 (partly) at Sonamura, one (severely) at Bishalgarh and one (partly) at Kumarghat.
An IANS report said, a disaster management official in Agartala said that the tremor was felt in several parts of the northeastern region including Tripura, Mizoram, parts of Assam and adjoining Bangladesh.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake struck at a depth of 55 km from the surface at 9.05 a.m.
The Disaster Management officials of Tripura and Mizoram said that there was no immediate report of any casualty.
Successive earthquakes in the mountainous northeastern states, especially in Assam, Mizoram and Manipur, have kept the authorities worried, forcing them to build quake-protective structures. Seismologists consider the northeastern region as the sixth most earthquake-prone belt in the world.
Our Udaipur correspondent added that cracks had appeared in around seven houses at Murir Tilla under Matabari constituency in Gomati district soon after the earthquake hit the state.
Our Charilam correspondent said that cracks were spotted in several houses at Routhkhola and Jangalia and the wall of Bishalgarh police station following the earthquake on Saturday morning.
A team of BJP’s Bishalgarh mandal visited the affected houses and assured assistance from the administration.
