Kailashahar, Mar 02: In a shocking turn of events, eleven members of three families have been left homeless following eviction of their houses by the administration without prior notice.
The incident has been reported from the Gournagar Gram Panchayat area near the Unakoti District Magistrate’s office.
The three families had been residing on government land in makeshift houses for the past seven to eight years. Firoz Sheikh and his family of four, Kadir Ali and his family of four, and Hasan Begum—a deserted woman—along with her two children, had built temporary shelters on the land.
The men in these families work as daily laborers, while the women work as domestic helpers. They were well aware that their stay on government land was not permanent, but they had nowhere else to go.
On Friday last, a team from the local administration, accompanied by Kailashahar police, arrived at the site and demolished the houses without any prior notice. When the families attempted to resist, they were reportedly beaten by the police. Additionally, household belongings were forcibly thrown away, and nearby vegetable gardens were destroyed, leaving the families with nothing.
For the past three days, these families have been living under the open sky, with their belongings temporarily placed in an abandoned quarter near the District Magistrate’s office. The evicted families claimed that they had sought some time—either a day or just a few hours—to relocate their belongings themselves, but the requests were ignored.
Now, left without shelter, the families are urging the administration to arrange immediate housing for them, either by relocating them to an alternative location or providing shelter in a government facility.
