Agartala, Sept 05: Minister in-charge for PWD Sushanta Chowdhury on Thursday informed the House that total 4,693 kilometers of roads across the state suffered damages due to the recent floods.
He also said that Rs. 1900 crore would be required to restore these roads to full functionality and the state government already allocated Rs. 200 crore for emergency restoration work.
Chowdhury was addressing the House in response to an urgent public calling attention notice moved by MLA Gopal Chandra Roy. The discussion highlighted the critical need for road repairs across the state.
The PWD minister emphasized that under the current government, the number of national highways in Tripura has increased, which now stands at 14,858.31 kilometers.
He assured the assembly that the Public Works Department has been continuously working to maintain these roads. Additionally, Rs. 30 crore has been allocated annually in the last state budget for the urgent repair of roads in each assembly constituency.
Opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury along with MLAs- Swapna Debbarma, Dipankar Sen, Biswajit Kalai, Tofajjal Hossain, Philip Kumar Reang, Pathanlal Jamatia, Nirmal Biswas, Jitendra Majumder and Sambhulal Chakma also participated in the discussion.
They expressed concern over the extent of the damage and the impact on daily life in the affected areas.
The road restoration work is expected to be a long and arduous process, with both the government and opposition leaders acknowledging the need for swift action to restore normalcy in the state.
