Khowai, Aug 24: The recent floods that affected Khowai district from August 21 to August 23 have caused severe damages, with the preliminary assessments estimated losses at around Rs. 400 crore, District Magistrate Chandni Chandran said on Saturday.
Speaking to the media, she said, the Fisheries department reported damages amounting to Rs. 180 crore, followed by the Agriculture department (Rs. 100 crore) and the Horticulture sector (Rs. 70 crore).
During these three days of severe flooding, a total of 72 relief camps were set up across the district, sheltering approximately 10,000 people. As of now, floodwaters have receded considerably in Khowai, and the situation has improved, with the Khowai River flowing well below the danger level. However, a red alert is in place for the district till August 25, the District Magistrate said.
Currently, there are 25 active relief camps in Khowai district, with 22 in the Teliamura sub-division and three in the Khowai sub-division, sheltering around 1,000 people.
Over 5,000 homes have been destroyed by the floods, with 2,900 of these in Teliamura sub-division and 2,400 in Khowai sub-division.
On Saturday, the District Magistrate held a review meeting with the officials from various departments to assess the present situation and tackle the post-flood challenges.
After the meeting, she briefed the media on the damages and on-going relief efforts. The meeting was attended by Khowai Sub-Divisional Magistrate Megha Jain, Additional Superintendent of Police Prabir Pal, and other officials concerned.
The District Magistrate assured that the cracks on the national highway near the 47 Miles area would be repaired within the next two days, restoring normal traffic flow. In response to a query, she also confirmed that children under the age of five are being provided with milk and other nutritious food as part of the relief measures.
