Agartala, Aug 21: With fresh spell of downpour, the flood situation is worsening in Tripura where all the major rivers are flowing above the danger mark.
The heavy showers since Monday morning caused severe floods and landslides accross Tripura claiming several lives and affecting thousands of people.
The district administrations have been taking necessary steps to provide shelter, foods and other essentials to the affected people while the emergency response teams are braving the menacing water to save lives.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and briefed him on the current flood situation.
The Chief Minister also requested for despatching additional NDRF teams to Tripura to support the emergency response. The Union Home Minister assured all necessary support to Tripura.
The Chief Minister appealed to all the social organizations, NGOs and citizens to remain vigilant and provide their all out support during this crisis.
In view of the current situation and further weather updates, the State Government has declared a two-day closure for all Schools on Aug 21 and 22 and Colleges on Aug 21.
In the meantime, one flap gate (out of 3) of Dumboor Dam has been opened and water being discharged from the Dam reservoir.
Another update from Khowai district administration said, the water levels are rising in the Khowai river and there is red alert in the district.
For the safety of citizens, movement of vehicles in roads adjoining river embankments has been restricted except for ambulances, vehicles carrying persons involved in relief/rescue/officials on disaster duty and carrying essentials.
In Agartala, almost all the major roads came under knee-deep water disrupting the normal life. Since there is prediction of more rainfall, the administration has appealed to the people to stay alert.
