Agartala March 28: The Tripura Rajya Upajati Ganamukti Parishad (GMP) has called for the dismissal of Minister Ratan Lal Nath from the state cabinet, citing allegations of “racist behaviour” and “caste-ethnic abuses” during a session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on March 24, 2025.
In a formal letter addressed to the Governor of Tripura, Indrasena Reddy Nallu, GMP expressed its strong condemnation of the incident and urged immediate action.
“The controversy arose when Leader of Opposition and CPI-M state secretary Jitendra Choudhury, who is also the National Chairman of the Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch, was discussing a corruption case allegedly involving a minister's family. During the discussion, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath reportedly made caste-based remarks and threats against MLA Choudhury, who is a respected leader of the Adivasi community with over two decades of experience as a Cabinet Minister and five years as an MP”, read the letter.
It further read, “We strongly condemn this behavior, which is shocking and alarming, especially since Minister Ratan Lal Nath is responsible for upholding the Constitution and democratic rights as the Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs”.
GMP emphasized that such behaviour is unprecedented in the history of the Tripura Legislative Assembly and deeply insulting to the democratic values and the Adivasi community of the state.
The organization highlighted the responsibility of Minister Nath, as the Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs, to uphold constitutional and democratic rights, which it claims he failed to do.
Stating that Minister Nath’s actions have diminished the respect of the legislature, the Ganamukti Parishad called for his removal from the state cabinet.
GMP further reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the dignity and rights of the Adivasi community and all democratic people in Tripura.
