Charilam Jan 16: In a remarkable agricultural initiative, mustard cultivation on 42 Kani (around 14 hectares) of agricultural land in Noapara under Bishalgarh assembly constituency, is thriving with government assistance.
On Thursday afternoon, Bishalgarh MLA Sushanta Deb, accompanied by officials from the Agriculture Department, visited several agricultural lands in Noapara to witness the progress firsthand.
Bishalgarh Horticulture Officer Himanish Lashkar and Agriculture Sector Officer Prabir Dutta, who have been instrumental in encouraging farmers to cultivate mustard completely free of cost also accompanied the MLA.
A total of 22 farmers are engaged in cultivating mustard on this extensive land area. The officials have provided comprehensive training to the farmers, demonstrating the benefits of mustard cultivation and how the yield of mustard production can be gradually increased.
One of the significant advantages highlighted by Sector Officer Prabir Dutta is the possibility of growing crops three times in the same land, a practice that was previously thought to be limited to two crop cycles per year.
This revelation has motivated the farmers even further, showing them the potential for increased productivity and profitability.
During the visit, one of the 22 farmers expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, "Currently, we are very profitable by cultivating agricultural land. Although we were badly affected by the floods last year, we did not give up. We are farmers, and we have to continue cultivating. The Agriculture Department of Bishalgarh has always inspired us to keep this mentality alive. We are getting fertilizer, seeds, everything completely free. Why shouldn't we cultivate?"
MLA Sushanta Deb spoke to the farmers and addressed their concerns. He also assured them of his support in solving any issues they face.
The mustard being cultivated on 42 Kani of land by these 22 farmers holds significant promise. If the yield meets expectations, the government has committed to purchasing one kilogram of mustard from the farmers at the price of Rs 85, ensuring a stable market for their produce.
However, one pressing issue raised by the farmers was the problem of water availability. The MLA assured them that he would address this concern promptly by discussing it with the relevant department to find a swift resolution.
