Agartala, Nov 19: The Janjati Suraksha Manch (JSM) – tribal body of the Tripura chapter on Sunday announced to go for delisting rally and mass gathering here at Agartala Swami Vivekananda Ground on December 25 next to press for the demand of revoking ST status for the tribal people who have converted to other religions.
Addressing a press conference here at Agartala Press Club on Sunday, the activists of the JSM said that there is a need to remove the ST benefits and status for the converted persons through amendment of the constitution in the parliament to preserve the culture and social customs of tribal communities in the state.
According to the activists of the JSM, benefits conferred upon Scheduled Tribes are intended to safeguard their distinct culture and social customs but those who have converted to other religions have diverged from the traditional tribal path and, as a result, no longer share the same cultural heritage.
