Agartala, Aug 28: The CPI(M) and its Left front in Tripura remembered the poet-politician Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and underlined his contribution in the politics and running government in West Bengal.
Politburo member Biman Bose, leaders from West Bengal, politburo member Manik Sarkar, leader of opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Choudhury and others were present in the memorial meeting held here at Agartala Town Hall on Wednesday.
Speaking in the event, politburo member Manik Sarkar mainly underlined Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s bonding with Tripura and said that Bhattacharjee, before and after he became the Chief Minister had always stood by Tripura.
“Bhattacharjee had worked with party leaderships in Tripura in various capacities of the CPI(M) from central committee to politburo,” Sarkar said, adding that Bhattacharjee also visited Tripura to join the party’s election rallies and party organisational conferences.
He said, “He participated in various struggles of the student and youth movements. He became the state secretary of West Bengal Democratic Youth Federation in 1968. Buddhadeb emerged as an important Party leader who undertook various responsibilities as a dedicated cadre.”
“He succeeded Jyoti Basu as the chief minister in November 2000 and was sworn in after that for another two terms. He had thus played a key role in the approach and policies of the Left Front government,” he added.
Left Front Chairman Biman Basu in his speech underscored that the human values that Bhattacharya imbibed in himself should be emulated by all the party organisers in the state. Basu recalled that during his underground days, Buddhadeb had to stay with him in a small room and that is when their camaraderie strengthened.
