Churaibari Aug 30: The Assam-Agartala National Highway No. 8, particularly the stretch from Churaibari to Bagbasa, has deteriorated significantly, causing severe inconvenience and danger to commuters.
Reportedly, the road, spanning approximately 11 km from Churaibari Gate to Shanicherra, Bagbasa, is in a deplorable state, with large potholes and collapsed sections due to rainwater erosion.
Local residents and drivers have reported numerous accidents, both minor and major, occurring daily.
Besides, the lack of proper drainage systems has exacerbated the situation, with rainwater and soil from nearby hills flooding the road.
“Despite repeated complaints and protests, the concerned department has not initiated any repair or renovation work”, alleged one of the locals.
“The hazardous condition of the road has turned it into a ‘death trap’, making it extremely difficult for patients, students, and daily commuters to travel safely”, he added.
The irked locals further added, “Accidents are everyday affairs on this road. A local lorry driver lost his life in a recent accident near Shanicherra School, and a woman gave birth on the roadside while being transported to Makunda Hospital”.
The locals have demanded immediate action to repair or rebuild the road, warning of an indefinite closure of the national highway if the demands are not met.
They also tried to draw the attention of the chief minister to prevent further deterioration and ensure safety of the commuters.
