Agartala Jan 14: Makar Sankranti, is celebrated as ‘Poush Parbon’ or ‘Poush Boron’ in almost every household of Tripura.
One of the prime attractions of the Poush Sankranti celebrations are Pithas. On this day, the festive spirit is palpable as the aroma of pithas fills up households.
It’s a day of celebration and tradition, where families come together to enjoy the simple yet profound pleasure of homemade pithas. The delightful scent of these traditional sweets, made from rice powder and ‘nalen gur’ jaggery paste, wafts through the air, evoking memories of past festivities and creating new ones.
Usually in villages, especially in the residences of farmers, new rice is brought into homes, to celebrate this festival. Rice flour made from this new rice using traditional techniques like rice pounders are used to make delicious pithas.
Women at first worship the Sun God in the early morning, starting the celebrations of the day.
In every home, mothers and sisters are seen busy in the kitchen, expertly preparing various types of pithas. The kitchen becomes a hive of activity, with laughter and chatter accompanying the rhythmic sounds of cooking. Chitoi pitha, malpua, and patishapta are just a few of the many delicious varieties being made, each with its own unique flavour and texture.
As families gather to partake in this beloved tradition, the atmosphere is one of warmth, love, and togetherness.
The pithas are not just a treat for the taste buds, but also a symbol of cultural heritage and familial bonds.
On this day, the aroma of pithas serves as a reminder of the richness of tradition and the joy of shared experiences.
