Agartala, Aug 25: The former Chief Minister and CPI(M) politburo member Manik Sarkar on Sunday visited the flood affected areas at Udaipur and Amarpur in Gomati district of the state and interacted with the flood victims presently sheltered in the relief camps and in their houses.
During his visit at Amarpur subdivision, Manik Sarkar interacted with the reporters and said that the three subdivisions – Udaipur, Amarpur and Sonamura was worst affected due to the high intensity of the water in river Gomati caused by the torrential rain since August 19 last, where several were rendered homeless and sheltered in the relief camps. He said that a major part of agricultural lands in addition to the residential houses were damaged by the flash flood.
Sarkar appealed to the government to stand by the flood affected people and initiate necessary assistance to the people especially sheltered in the relief camps. Sarkar felt the necessity of regular monitoring of the people including children and women in the relief camps and said that there is a need to ensure safety for the women in relief camps and proper assistance to the children.
Medicines and other necessary materials in addition to food are to distributed in a proper way to the flood victims, who are still sheltered in the relief camps, he said, adding that although the flood situation is gradually improving over 1 lakh people are still sheltered in the relief camps, who need utmost care now so that are not infected by any waterborne diseases.
“I would also demand the government to take the responsibility of medical expenses for those flood victims, who were injured and fell ill during and post flood,” Sarkar said, adding that there are many families who lost their only bread earner in this flood. He demanded to ensure government job for a single member of those needy families in addition to financial assistance.
He also appealed to the government to stand by the farmers, who were worst affected in this flash flood. He said as a major part of agricultural lands were damaged by the flood, the government needs to stand by the farmers and compensate them accordingly. He also felt the necessity of an urgent restoration of the power sector to ensure resumption of drinking water supply in the flood affected areas.
On the other hand, the Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Choudhury on Sunday visited flood affected Ashwini Tripura Para under Gardhang Gram Panchayat of Shantirbazar subdivision, where at least 7 people of 2 separate families died due to landslide during the flash flood. Choudhury took stock of the post-flood situation in Sabroom and other parts and interacted with the victims.
