Two days after Congress activist Sahajahan Islamâs father and brother were arrested; Muslim families living in the vicinity of Shantipara condemned Sahajahanâs viral video against Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and urged the administration not to punish his family for his âmisdeedsâ.
Speaking to the media persons, a neighbour of Shahjahanâs family said that Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha always maintained a cordial relationship with families near the mosqueâcollectively called the âMasjid Bariâ.
âWe have a relationship with Dr Sahaâs family for generations. My father worked at the petrol pump owned by Dr Sahaâs father. We always regarded him as a guardian of the area. When he became the Chief Minister of the state, we celebrated the event. He is our pride. He always stood beside us be it in the time of crisis or festivities. No Hindu brother from this locality ever interfered in our religious rituals neither did we. During Durga Puja celebrations, we have been specially invited by the organisers and during our Eid they share greetings with us. What happened on the June 08 night should have never happened,â he said.
Another native of the same area said that people like Nagadhiraj Datta and Dr Manik Saha had always guided them. âHe never charged us a penny when he used to practice at the Shantipara chamber. Nagadhiraj Datta is also an elder who always stood beside us in need. In these circumstances, we can never support what Sahajahan had done. He tried to malign the image of the Chief Minister which is undesirable,â he added.
A family member of Sahajahan, on the other hand, pleaded innocence of his father and brother who are now under judicial custody.
âSahajahan should be punished for his deeds but his elderly father and brother should not be treated as criminals. They had done nothing wrong. They should be released as soon as possible,â a female member of Sahajahanâs family told reporters.
