Agartala Dec 24: Minister for Food, Sushanta Chowdhury on Tuesday, inaugurated the National Consumers Day celebrations at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala, emphasizing the critical importance of financial vigilance and consumer awareness.
The event organized by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department aimed to promote awareness about consumer laws.
In his address, Minister Chowdhury said, “In today's digital age, many consumers are unaware of their rights and the proper steps to take when they are cheated, often leading to significant financial losses”.
He pointed out that a growing number of unscrupulous businessmen are engaging in deceptive practices, which not only financially harm consumers but also corrupt the social system.
The Food Minister reiterated the government's commitment to educating the public about consumer laws to protect their rights and interests.
The theme of this year's National Consumer Day, "Virtual Hearings and Digital Access of Consumer Justice," highlights the need for accessible consumer justice in the digital era.
To further this goal, Minister Chowdhury announced a series of upcoming seminars in colleges, focusing on road accidents, illegal drug use, and the Jago Grahak Jago program.
“These seminars, organized jointly by the Departments of Transport, Home Affairs, and Food, Public Procurement, and Consumer Affairs, will also be conducted at the state level to maximize reach and impact”, he said.
The day’s program saw participation from merchant associations, students and teachers from various schools and colleges, and ration shop dealers.
Sanjay Bhattacharjee, Secretary, Law Department, Retired District Sessions Judge Ruhi Das Pal and Joint Director of the Food, Civil Services, and Consumer Affairs Department Abhijit Biswas among others remained present at the program.
