Agartala/Charilam Mar 10: A team of Left-Congress MPs, AICC and PCC leaders came under attack at Nehalchandra Nagar in Bishalgarh on Friday.
During their visit and interaction with the victims, some people started arguing with the visiting leaders and the situation became volatile. Sensing danger, the leader escaped from the spot – however, their vehicles were ransacked. Accompanying security personnel reportedly did not come to the rescue of the Congress-Left leaders.
The team – comprising of PCC Chief and newly elected Congress MLA Birajit Sinha and Gopal Roy, Congress MP Abdul Khaleque, general secretary of AICC Dr Ajay Kumar, State Congress working committee president Sukanta Chakraborty, CPIM State secretary and MLA Jitendra Choudhury - went to visit the Nehalchandra Nagar bazaar where 20 shops were gutted in fire on Wednesday night. The delegation was led by CPIM MP Elaram Karim.
Later, in a tweet Dr Ajay Kumar wrote, “Attack manifested by ruling party goons on us at Nehalchandranagar including delegates of MPs, AICC leaders who accompanied. Tripura Police is merely acting as spectators and no action on the spot”.
Speaking to the media, Birajit Sinha slammed the Police for their ‘inaction’ and blamed the BJP activists for the incident.
In a statement, CPIM State Committee vehemently condemned the attack on the Congress-Left Front delegation.
“This incident aptly describes the deterioration of public safety and law and order in the State where even the visiting MPs are unsafe. Life and livelihood of common people are in peril in the State owing to the miscreants’ attack”, the Statement read and demanded immediate arrests of the culprits.
Notably, three teams of Congress and Left Front MPS and AICC leaders landed in Agartala on a two-day visit to collect ground reports on post-poll violence in the State. The visiting MPs are expected to raise the issue of the post-poll violence in the Parliament.
