Agartala, July 08: National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) top leader Jackob Hrangkhal, who was brought to Agartala from Mizoram on Friday, was remanded to police custody for five days.
Hrangkhal had been arrested in Mizoram on Wednesday last and brought to Agartala by a team of Tripura Police on a transit remand on Friday morning.
According to an official press release of Tripura Police, the NLFT leader is wanted in connection with a case pending at New Capital Complex police station regarding extortion demand of Rs. 1 Crore from one Subir Kumar Debbarma of Kunjaban. The case was registered under various sections of IPC and ULA(P) Act.
After his detention, a team of Tripura Police led by Dy SP Jayanta Karmakar reached Mizoram and brought the accused person to New Capital Complex police station after obtaining transit remand from a local Court in Aizawl, Mizoram.
“Jackob Hrangkhal is SS President of NLFT Group as per the extremist list maintained by concerned Government authorities and he was also wanted in connection with a Non-Bailable Warrant of Teliamura Police Station,” the press release said.
The NLFT leader will be interrogated by police, Special Branch and other central agencies.
The NLFT was formed in 1989 and set up camps in different parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar before it was banned by the Union Home Ministry in 1991. However, a large number of its leaders and cadres surrendered over the years with their arms and ammunition, leading to the outfit almost becoming non-existent.
