Agartala March 11: The Animal Resources Development Department, Government of Tripura, organized a state-level seminar on "Pig Diseases with Special Reference to Classical Swine Fever" at the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan, Agartala on Tuesday.
The seminar was inaugurated by Sudhangshu Das, Minister of Animal Resources Development, SC Welfare & Fisheries, who served as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Minister Das emphasized the importance of creating job opportunities through pig farming to bolster the rural economy of the state.
He underscored the critical role of pig farming in generating job opportunities, highlighting its potential to significantly boost the rural economy of the state.
By encouraging and supporting pig farming initiatives, the Minister aims to create sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.
Prominent speakers at the seminar included Vijay Sardana, Agri-business expert and Supreme Court Advocate, who shared valuable insights on pork-based marketing strategies with a specific focus on Tripura. Dr. S.S. Patil, Principal Scientist at NIVEDI, Bengaluru, highlighted the critical need for routine vaccination and continuous disease surveillance to control Classical Swine Fever in the region.
Dr. N.N. Barman, Professor at the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Khanapara, Guwahati, discussed the North Eastern Region as a hub for both emerging and non-emerging livestock diseases, advocating for the establishment of modern disease diagnostic centers.
Dr. Arnab Sen, Principal Scientist from West Bengal, addressed strategies to manage Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and Porcine Circovirus Type 2 in the North Eastern region.
Deepa D. Nair, IFS, Secretary of the Animal Resources Development Department, Government of Tripura, underscored the necessity for scientific, skillful, and climate-resilient practices to advance the piggery sector in the state. Dr. N.K. Chanchal, IFS, Additional Secretary & Director of ARDD, delivered the welcome address.
The seminar also recognized the Pig Breeding Farm in Jalefa, South Tripura, for its exemplary pig management and production.
The one-day seminar, sponsored by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India, witnessed enthusiastic participation from nearly 200 veterinary officers and senior department officials.
