Agartala, Mar 17: The Left Front has named Rajendra Reang, as CPM candidate for the East Tripura Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming elections. Additionally, Ratan Das has been nominated as the party's nominee for the Ramnagar 7 assembly constituency bypolls.
Addressing a press conference, CPM party convener Narayan Kar, announced that Rajendra Reang, a former MLA, will represent the CPM in the East Tripura Lok Sabha seat, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST).
He also declared Ratan Das, a former CPI-M MLA and the current West District Committee Secretary, as the party's candidate for the by-polls to 7-Ramnagar Assembly Constituency scheduled on April 19 next.
In the East Tripura Sabha seat, Reang, who previously represented the Kanchanpur assembly constituency, will compete against BJP candidate Kriti Singh Debbarma.
CPIM State Secretary, Jitendra Chowdhury, stated that the Left parties will pay full support for their INDIA Bloc’s partner Congress nominee Ashish Kumar Saha in the West Tripura Lok Sabha seat, aiming for victory of the alliance.
The secret ties between BJP and TIPRA Motha is now evident, Chowdhury said.
He accused TIPRA Motha party leaders of betraying their promise not to compromise on the Greater Tripura Land demand, suggesting their motivation was to gain power through an alliance with the ruling party.
Chowdhury claimed that the demands of the Tipra Motha party are far from reality and their activities are exacerbating the division between tribal and non-tribal communities in the state.
Choudhury urged all secular political parties and voters to support the CPM candidate, emphasizing the restoration of democracy in Tripura as a crucial goal.
The Left front convenor emphasized that Rajendra Reang's father, Sharbajay Reang, was killed by militants.
He raised concerns over various issues, including corruption, unemployment, price rise, and religious extremism, attributing them to the current ruling government at both the national and state levels. Kar lamented the restriction of opposition parties' ability to hold meetings and rallies freely, asserting that democracy is under threat under the current administration.
