Teliamura, Jun 17: Despite advancements in modern science and improved education and healthcare systems, many people remain unaware and continue to rely on traditional practices.
The Reang community in Hazarapara in Kakracherra ADC village under Mungiakami Block, about 15 km from the Assam-Agartala National Highway at Chakmaghat reportedly still prefers traditional healers over medical professionals.
In a recent incident, a local elderly man, suspected to have tuberculosis (TB), avoided free government-provided treatment.
Instead, he relied on medications from a local pharmacy.
This incident highlights a significant gap in healthcare awareness and access in these remote areas.
Unscrupulous pharmacy operators exploit the ignorance of these simple villagers, further endangering their health.
There has been a growing call for local authorities to implement awareness campaigns about proper healthcare. Despite being part of the Krishnapur constituency and under the jurisdiction of the Health Department of the Tribal Autonomous District Council, overseen by officials Kamal Kalai and Tribal Welfare Minister Bikas Debbarma, no effective measures have reportedly been taken. The ongoing neglect raised serious concerns about the responsibilities and actions of local representatives.
