Kalyanpur, Jan 13: Poush Sankranti, a significant cultural festival for Bengali Hindus, marks the end of the Bengali month of Poush. Traditionally celebrated with great fervor, this festival has seen a decline in urban areas due to modernization. However, rural areas still preserve the customs with enthusiasm.
Villages across the state came alive with the creation of "Burir Ghor" (elderly woman’s house), a key tradition of the festival on Monday. Children, teenagers and adults joined hands to build these structures using straw and harvested paddy. The night will be filled with celebrations, including cooking, singing and dancing around these symbolic houses.
Elderly participants shared stories of how devotional gatherings, such as Kirtan and "Hori Loot," were an integral part of the celebrations. Despite the chill of winter, the community spirit brought warmth to the festivities.
The festival will culminate on Tuesday, with the burning of Burir Ghor at dawn, followed by holy dips and offerings to ancestors. Poush Sankranti remains a reminder of Bengal's rich cultural heritage, kept alive by the vibrant efforts of rural communities.
