Agartala, Feb 22: Tapan Debbarma, the prime accused of journalist Sudip Dutta Bhowmik murder case of 2017, was granted bail by the High Court of Tripura on Wednesday.
Advocate Pijush Kanti Biswas, who represented Debbarma, said the bail was earlier granted by the Additional District and Sessions Court but CBI had challenged it in the High Court where the bail was cancelled.
Debbarma then moved the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s order and filed SLP.
According to Biswas, after hearing, the Apex court had set aside the High Court’s order and asked to consider the bail petition with some points like if there was any possibility of early completion of the trial, whether he would be available after getting bail and if there was any chance of influencing the witnesses by the accused.
As per the Supreme Court’s order, the hearing on the bail plea was held in the High Court on Tuesday and the bail was granted to Debbarma after more than five years of his arrest. The High Court also asked Debbarma to appear before the Investigating Officer every week.
Debbarma, who was posted as commandant of 2nd-Bn TSR, was arrested days after journalist Sudip Datta Bhowmik was shot dead in his officer chamber on Nov 21, 2017. The CBI is investigating the case at present.
