Teliamura Feb 25: For the fifth time, the surrendered militant groups have united to block the national highway. This time, the Daniel group of the surrendered militant organization Tripura United Indigenous Returning People's Council joined the blockade of the Assam-Agartala National Highway on the Chandrasadhu Para Bridge adjacent to Baramura Hills from Tuesday morning.
The blockade was in support of a 21-point demand, causing significant disruption to the communication system.
With board exams underway and daily office commuters affected, the administrative level experienced a rush to address the issue.
At the blockade site, a large number of police personnel were observed in reserve, ready to handle any situation. The police administration claimed to be prepared for any eventuality.
The agitators expressed frustration over the government's indifferent attitude towards their demands.
Speaking to the reporters, they highlighted the lack of relief in the context of various cases, even after many years of surrender.
One of the 21 demands is the unconditional withdrawal of pending cases from their time as militants. They also called for the introduction of Roman letters, the inclusion of general areas into several ADC areas, and the renaming of places that now bear Bengali names. Additionally, they demanded measures to help surrenderees live a normal life.
In the field of education, they put forth the demand of free lifelong education for their children, housing arrangements, and social and economic security based on agreements. These demands were outlined in a document presented during the blockade.
Meanwhile, the administration spoke to the movement of surrendered extremists and assured them that the unconstitutional demands would be investigated soon.
Based on this assurance, the protesters lifted the blockade of the national highway after about eight hours.
